Since it was proposed, the Software-defined networking(SDN) technology has sparked the constantly thinking, discussion and practice of it. But in view of the possible SDN network deployments and applications, centralized control of SDN may face some technical problems. The research focused on the scalability of SDN network controllers has theoretical significance and practical value.By analyzing the performance bottleneck caused by the SDN centralized control and related solutions, the thesis proposes a technical approach of distributed controller based on clustering in perspective of increasing controllers’ processing performance. Through the analysis of the characteristics and limitations of OpenFlow protocol, this thesis proposes a controller load balancing approach based on migration of SDN switches by using the three modes of controllers defined by OpenFlow protocol. Considering the requirements of applying SDN techniques to the multiple administrative domains network, this thesis also analyzes and studies the federal controller architecture with interoperability across multi-domains and the interactive interfaces between federal control planes. The experimental results show that the proposed load balancing approach based on the switch migration can effectively improve the performance of SDN control plane.
