3GPP had initiated the long term evolution (LTE) as the develop direction of the next-generation wireless mobile communication at the end of 2004. In order to satisfy the increasing demand for higher data rates, Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) was proposed to meet the requirements of point-to-multipoint multimedia transmission services. It serves a larger number of users who have the same requirements with fewer resources. But some problems come:how to select the transmission rate for the multicast group, how to allocate the resource block and which multicast group can get the resource block. These problems make the scheduling of multicast services more challenging. This thesis mainly discusses the wireless resource scheduling of MBMS in LTE system and analyzes the performance of the scheduling algorithm from the view of the system level simulation. As a broadcast system requires uplink feedback, MBMS’s performance is limited by UEs in poor connections. To this end, this thesis proposes two Frequency Domain Packet Scheduling (FDPS) algorithms for the transmission of multimedia streaming in MBMS of LTE networks, TLSMS algorithm and TLSMS-BOE algorithm. The proposed schemes divide the multimedia streaming into two layers which are characterized by two different flows:the basic layer and the enhancement layer. To serve all users and increase the throughput at the same time, the two layers use different scheduling methods base on the channel quality of UEs.In TLSMS scenario, each multicast group will firstly get two RB blocks for its service, one for the transmission of basic layer, and the other for enhancement layer. Then the reminding RB blocks will be allocated for the transmission of enhancement layer to the multicast group who has the lowest throughput. In TLSMS-BOE scenario, all the RB blocks are firstly allocated to the multicast groups for the transmission of enhancement layer. Then each multicast group will select an allocated RB block in which the enhancement service will be replaced by the basic service. The rule of selection is to minimize the loss of throughput.Theoretical analysis and simulation show that in practical application, the suggested schemes are of practically valuable as they have better system performance in comparison with the existing approaches. TLSMS scenario has better performance on fairness, and TLSMS-BOE scenario has advantage in higher system throughput and user spectral efficiency.
