The virtual touring technology will create a specific emulational virtual environment in which allows users to ramble around and feel the objects in any perspective of view with immersion experience. The virtual touring technology will change our lives and modes of production in the future as a fast-developing new technology so that it has practical significance for us to study it. Hunan Industry Polytechnic located in the Hexi guiding development zone is one of the nation-demonstrative vocational college which has two teaching buidings, one office buiding, two experimental buildings, one laborary and a factory attached to school. In order to display the multi-dimensional architectural sketch, let people appreciate the scene of polytechnic through internet and allow the public understand the actual demands of the construction and development, Hunan Industry Polytechnic sets up a research group to establish the Hunan Industry Polytechnic Virtual Touring System.This paper overviews the domestic and overseas development of virtual touring technology, compares relevant realization method and finally selects Virtools as the development platform. A virtual tourting system design based on 3DS Max and Virtools then will be determined with non-functional requirement analysis, practical analysis and functional analysis. In this paper, we will introduce the function modules of the system in details and carry on comprehensive system tests. The system uses 3DS Max to construct the models of buidings and landscapes in Hunan Industry Polytechnic, then setups UVW mapping and material rendering, finally imports the three-dimensional models into Virtools which will become the virtual scenes in the virtual touring system. Through script program in Virtuals, the landscapes and teaching environment in Hunan Industry Polytechnic have been digitalized and virtualized and it contains automatic touring pattern and role touring pattern which improve the user experience. Interface and music design enrich the function of the system. In the end of the paper, a software test is conducted which proves that the three-dimensional models and the whole environment in Hunan Industry Polytechnic Virtual Touring System is very realistic, the interface is concise, the manipulation is simple, the function of the modules is complete. The system acquires practicability and realize the design goal.The key technologies we used are VSL script program, role-obstacle collision detection, moving limitation, sound control, camera control and lighting effects. Practice has proved that the system can be applied to other building virtual touring and can be extended and borrowed in other systems. The article gives prospect for the future extension in the end.
