With the introduction and development of smart grid, power line carrier communications, as the core technology of smart grid, has gradually drawn people’s attention. In recent years, the requirement of the high performance of power line carrier communications from distribution network automation, and the reliable and rapid data transmission on power lines have been an urgency. In the medium-voltage power line carrier, the communication technology of OFDM has shown its outstanding performance in anti-frequency selective fading, anti-multipath transmission and anti-narrow band interference. With the development of DSP, the technology of OFDM has been successfully applied by using rapid DSP chips and softwares. The paper is about the software design and implementation of medium-voltage power line carrier communications based on DSP. The sofrware design is divided into two parts: OFDM modulation and demodulation module together with adaptive routing module.The paper first introduces the development of power lines and analysizes the application background of medium-voltage power line carrier communications in China. It also puts forward that China is in urgent need of research into and development of medium-voltage power line carrier communications products. Besides, it introduces the structure of medium-voltage distribution network, the common ways of communications implementment in China and how OFDM brings its superiority into full play in medium-voltage power line carrier communications. Moreover, it analysizes the multipath effect, attenuation characteristics and noise characteristics by combining the study and testing results of medium-voltage power line carrier channel in literature both at home and abroad. Finally it proposes the basic principles of OFDM.OFDM modulation and demodulation module is a software designed based on the characteristics of medium-voltage power line communications channel in China, which can transmit data in medium-voltage power line channel and meet the need of certain performance target. This paper first puts forward the aim of design and then probes the details, principles and procedures of design of software modulation and demodulation module function with reference to hardware chips.Adaptive routing module is a brand-new routing algorithm that has expandability in nature and can effectively solve the problem of the distribution of medium-voltage power line carrier communications. The whole algorithm can make a full use of multiple paths. By real-time updating the routing table to make a judgement about carrier communication routes, it can still send and receive data in time when there is a blockage.
