Since we are living in a three-dimensional world, an adequate description of relative position and motion of the different objects in a scene is needed. Human beings have satisfied this need for spatial perception by two eyes. This stereo vision ability is the basis that allows the brain to calculate qualitative depth information of the observed scene. Thus, the technique of obtaining complete 3D information which is similar to human eyes is paid more and more attention.The growing demand for 3D vision system is growing rapidly, scannerless optical range imaging systems are emerging as an interesting alternative to conventional intensity imaging in a variety of applications, including pedestrian security, biomedical appliances, robotics and industrial control etc. It is known that several types of optical techniques for 3D imaging range measurement are available in nonscanning optical 3D measurement method, triangle method, interferomerty, the time of flight method and structured light.Time-of-Flight(TOF) method introduced in this dissertation has been vigorously developing for its high portability, high stability and low cost. It’s studied from the following aspects.First, the survey of current research on the status of TOF at home and abroad is investigated, mainly from the depth-TOF camera. In order to understand the development trend of TOF technology, the performance of TOF sensor and system are analyzed.Second, the principles of Time of flight method should be comprehended. Increasingly, it’s appropriate to study the Algorithm of Phase Demodulation and expand to analysis the system error of non-scanning TOF system.Third, in order to understand the TOF principle deeply, the depth image acquisition system which sets the image sensor as the core and equipped with peripheral circuits.Fourth, it’s proper to study the three-dimensional reconstruction algorithm, therefore, the space conversion of the depth data from the sensor is possible to accomplish the ultimate goal of displaying the corresponding 3D image.
