The Text Structure Of “If Youare The One”and Its Cultural Significance

Entering the second decade of the new century, to find someone to fall in love and get married has been a tough target for the young and middle-aged people as well as their parents, especially with the emerging of the leftover men and women. Dating shows like “If you are the one” perceive the pulse of life, and become the mainstream culture. With the heating up of the dating shows, the dating activities, once hidden in Chinese culture, have become a hot topic that has been involved socially. As a top-rated and media consumption TV program, “If you are the one” has become a complicated popular culture text. On one hand, it perceives the changes in reality, and attaches the enhanced cultural significance in amusement by serving the society with fashionable topics, and meantime delivers the spirit of freedom and democratic by offering the youth an opportunity to tell things as what they think it is, and then deconstruct the traditional value on love and marriage along with morals; On the other hand, it revealed the naked value of money worship and hedonism, and the middle-class value on love and marriage to the audience.In this paper, we take the program “If you are the one” as an independent literary structure, and analyses it and its meaning by using the semiotics theory of Morris and Roland Barthes, and meantime analyses its production operations and various of ways of interpretation for the targeted audiences by using the critical theory of mass culture of the Frankfurt School, as well as Stuart Hall、Fiske Cultural Studies theory. Then we come to the final conclusion that, as each coin has two sides, both the advantage and limitation of “If you are the one” should to be referred to: From the positive point of view, it possesses advantage among the programs of the same type; On the contrary, it is too much of a show rather than a springing of genuine feeling. A program can only remain invincible if it can do something good for the massive for their final settlement in life- marriage, and let the positive energy passing on.
