A triplexer that provides a triple play service(data, voice, and video) is considered as a key component for a fiber to the home(FTTH) network. For future photonic integrated circuits(PICs), compact even ultracompact photonic devices are needed and the compactness of triplexer becomes a hot issue. In this paper, the triplexer based on multimode interference(MMI) coupler is fully studied. Besides, on the basis of the theoretical analysis of slot waveguide and by optimizing the device’s structure, a novel triplexer with smaller size is achieved.Firstly, general self-image properties of the exponential-tapered multimode interference couplers are investigated thoroughly to fulfill the compact integrated triplexer. Based on the general self-image properties of the exponential-tapered MMI coupler, a novel compact triplexer is elaborately designed.Secondly, the theory of slot waveguide is fully studied and a multi-slab based physical model is set up for a general multi-slot waveguide. With this model, some properties and application conditions of it are analyzed and discussed fully.Finally, we pioneer a novel triplexer based on slot waveguide. Due to the high index contrast material system and its special slot effect, the novel triplexer is ultracompact with 5?m total width, 335?m total length and 0.5?m height. The goal of the triplexer’s compactness is realized.
