Wireless sensor network (WSN) consists of a large number of tiny and low-powered micro sensor nodes which communicate with each other through wireless links for monitoring a field of interest. However, the energy of sensors is limited and it is not essential or impossible to replace batteries. Therefore energy efficiency has become the primary factor when designing wireless sensor networks routing algorithm. Due to the characteristic that data is the core of WSN, data transmission reliability must be considered.Sensor nodes, architecture, characteristics and applications of WSN are introduced first. Then, the main idea, basic working process and some existing problems of LEACH (low energy adaptive clustering hierarchy) protocol are introduced. And improved methods are talked, which include changing condition to select cluster head and changing transmission mechanism. Third, a clustering routing algorithm based on link performance is proposed for ensuring the network lifetime and transmission reliability of data, in which residual energy of sensor node and link performance are considered. The purpose to add residual energy and link performance to the cluster head selection criteria is that the node with more residual energy and better link performance is selected as cluster head, which balances energy consumption and prolongs the network lifetime and ensures the data reliable transmission. The simulation results in MATLAB prove the algorithm effectively balances the energy consumption and increases the valid data received by the base station, which can be reference to routing protocol design for WSNs. Fourth, we propose a new method for selecting the next-hop node in multi-hop transmission, in which residual energy and the distance are considered. One node with more residual energy and short distance can be selected as the next-hop node. The simulation results show that the method can balance the energy consumption of each node and prolong the network lifetime. Finally, we conclude the paper and give some suggestions for future works.
