With the rapid development of the weapon equipment in recent decades, the aircraft and missiles can fly faster and disguise better. In modern warfare, the incoming targets should be detected timely and intercepted precisely. So it is necessary to ensure real-time image processing. Infrared Surveillance System(IRSS) is used for target detection, recognition and track by employing electro-optical detectors to receive infrared emission of the targets passively, and has the advantages of self-hiding and strong capacity of resisting disturbance. It’s widely used in infrared warning and precision-guided weapons systems. Therefore, how to improve the performance of infrared target detection ability to increase the detection distance of target and obtain the related information has important significance. However, since the detection field of a single system is limited, the infrared detection and warning system will lose a target when the target moves out of the monitoring field. Thus, how to make the system track the infrared small target automatically and increase the detection range of the system is a leading topic which has important theory significance and engineering application value.Firstly, this paper analyzes and compares several background suppression and target detection algorithms. Secondly, detection and track of the moving targets are realized by using the partial difference equation, adaptive threshold algorithm, data association and Kalman filter algorithm respectively. Finally, on the hardware platform of DM642, the infrared dim point-targets tracking can be completed timely through a series of operations which include video capture, background suppression, target clustering, target tracking and PTZ control. At the same time, DSP feedbacks different movement commands to PTZ so as to achieve the independently stable tracking for moving targets.The experimental results show that each module of the system can completely satisfy the requirement of the project. This system is able to detect weak and small infrared targets real timely, track the moving target independently and stably and make the target lie in the center of imaging frame.
