Power line communication is a communication technology which transmits data through power distribution network. Because the power line distribution network has reached thousands of households, it will not only avoid the trenching and laying of cable and reduce the cost of infrastructure, but also provide a wide network for flexible transport and access communication. As the approaching of the era of big data information, the system of smart home network has aroused intensive interests. All kinds of household electrical appliances can be connected and communication through the power line network. With the increasing of the spectrum requirement, the power line communication can combine with the wireless communication and optical fiber communication for more flexibility and high efficiency.In this paper, firstly, we analyzed various noises consisted in the power line, such as colored noise, impulse noise and narrow-band noise, and multipath fading caused by the switches over the power line.Secondly, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) technology is often used to reduce the inter symbol interference. According to the performances of power line channel and the characteristics of OFDM, we will apply the OFDM technology to the power line system and improve the performance of the power line system with the channel estimation algorithm.Finally, the power line communication is compared to other indoor communication technologies and the future of the combination of the power line communication and other communication technologies are analyzed and expected.
