In September 1807,the first Protestant missionary Morrison came to China,opened the history of spreading Protestantism in China,Morrison also pioneered the missionary newspapers for this missionary work. In February 1830,the first American missionary Bridgman came to China,and then,in 1832,Chinese Repository appeared and ended in 1851,it experienced 20 years around the first Opium War,it was the witness of the China history during which period China had been forced to modernization.It is the first English newspapers founded in China which takes introducing China to the western countries as its duty,although the newspaper is founded by missionaries,preaching is not the first priority,but introduced China to the west from the full-range and different angles,and was praised as encyclopedia of China, and its current sections is a dynamic image of China. This article from the news published in the current sections, makes the detailed text analysis of this newspaper’s published news sources,audience,content,forms,characteristics and other aspects, and then discusses how this newspaper reflects the Chinese image to the west through the published news that time.Chinese Repository as a newspaper in modern history of China and then was the only foreign language newspaper introduced China to the west, the news reports published on it was the one of the reference frames of modern Chinese journalism, and had remarkable influence on the modern Chinese journalism. At the same time, as one of the originators of Chinese modern journalism, at the time that the newspapers had not been fully spread, the newspaper published news reports had some shortcomings. This article takes the current reports on the Chinese Repository as the research object, discusses the original texts in order to see the development of the journalism at that time, and its influences on the modern Chinese journalism.In this article, the first chapter is mainly to do some relevant investigations on the origins of founders, the main authors and the historical positions of the Chinese Repository. At that time, Chinese Repository was strongly supported by the first Protestant missionary Morrison, and gained financial assistance from American merchant in China Olive, sponsored and founded by the first missionary Bridgman;it provided an important medium for the western people in China at that time to know China. Moreover,Morrison,Bridgman, Williams were the three main authors of the newspaper, just because of the newspapers, these three missionaries have long enjoyed the good reputations in China; the founding of Chinese Repository opened the new start for the foreign newspapers which towards the western people reporting Chinese events. It started in 1832 and stopped in 1851 just experienced the 20 years around the first Opium War, it was the witness of the China history during which period China being forced to modernization,meanwhile,it was also an important historical research text material related to that time.The second chapter in this article is mainly about the relevant historical research and text analysis on the sources of current events column and the audience of the Chinese Repository. The object of this article is the news report published in the current events column of the Chinese Repository, whether news reports now or in the history should have the information sources and audience,this is an essential part in the chain of the transmission,in this chapter,the author makes some related historical analysis through looking into the relevant historical material,translated newspaper texts which combined with the nature of the newspaper,and then discusses the information sources and the composition of audience.The third chapter in this article is the classification of the contents of news report in the Chinese Repository,and it includes the internal affairs,diplomacy,society,military,economy and culture. In this chapter,the author combines<Chinese Repository>catalog and classification index with the related titles of the news reports,divides the news reports into six categories,makes analysis on text contents of every category,discusses the features of the contents,and most of the social reports are negative,it can be concluded that when the western people in China reported something about China,they had some sort of "agenda-setting"color and a sense of the western superiority.The fourth chapter in this article makes relevant analysis of the characteristics of the current events reporting in Chinese Repository. By making some related investigations into the layout of newspaper,translating newspaper texts and combining with the relevant historical material,the author gets the current events report’s characteristics such as university,continuity,diversity of genre,etc,it also began to have the modern journalism’s vision in editing,it began to pay attention to the reading experience of the readers,it became the prototype of a mature newspaper in later times.The fifth chapter in this article makes research into how the western people in China translated the Chinese image to the western countries by analyzing the contents of the news reports in Chinese Repository. This chapter makes analysis about the function of the media’s"agenda setting",get the conclusion that Chinese Repository as a missionary sovereign newspaper,it reported China to the west selectively,so built a "mimetic environment" of that time in western countries,reflected the three main Chinese images of that time:the "Celestial Empire" politics,seclusion trade and miserable social life.The sixth chapter in this article is mainly analyzes the news reports in Chinese Repository,as the news report in history,its influences upon the modern Chinese journalism and its shortcomings. Chinese modern newspapers was started by the missionaries in China then,as one of the modern foreign language newspapers in modern China,Chinese Repository plays an important role of reference in the formation and development of Chinese modern journalism. As a newspaper that had a definite newspaper policy, it’s printing made contributions to the later China’s printing freedom indirectly,and had a far-reaching influence on the later newspapers,publishing in aspect of editing. However,it as one of the originating places of Chinese modern journalism,it has its own defects,especially in timeliness and accuracy.
