Kongliao Sa, a prominent journalist during the 20th century in China, began to undertake journalism in 1927 who responded actively to running newspapers for several newspaper offices, covering Beijing Evening News, World Journal, Lin Pao, Xinjiang Daily, Xinshu Daily, Guangming Daily and Hua Shang Daily and so on. In brief, Mr. Sa boasts of a really versatile news worker in the history of Chinese journalism, assuming such positions as journalist, editor, manager, editor in chief till the general manager in the end.Based on abundant news practice, Mr. Sa gradually formed his own news ideas. The achievements he has made in journalism can be systematically categorized and demonstrated in several ways---the studies on the news basic theories, the news business itself, the news management and the press staffs moral and professionalism. In terms of the studies on the basic theories, Mr. Sa casts a good description of what news rooted and redefines what news is from the materialistic point of view. He, furthermore, advocates that news should be closely connected with man, who are also supposed to benefit a lot from newspaper. Second, about the news business itself, Mr. Sa insists that the news report should reflect what the journalists stress, and he also put great emphasis on the timeliness and reality of the commentaries, especially editorials among which he assumes should be able to guide the actions of readers directly. In editing newspaper, the proposal that he made delivers that there should be as much information as possible we can receive in a minimum of space. Attaching great importance to the communications between readers and editors, he supposes that editors should have the awareness of readers. Third, about how to manage newspaper business, he argues for the scientific management approaches which can be brought in from large enterprises. He assumes that much attention should be paid to the newspaper’s economic benefits, at the same time news offices cannot be interest-oriented ignoring the social responsibilities of newspaper. Besides, about its staffs morals and professionalism, he stresses that news workers should have the courage of devoting themselves into the development of Chinese news.Under the influence of western liberalistic news theories and Marxist ideology, Mr. Sa’s news ideas have much to do with the social situation at that time in China. It is these factors that make his ideas vividly mirror the characteristics of that times. As an important part of Chinese news theory history, many of his ideas are extremely sensitive and long-sighted, as well as of great significance in enlightening the cotemporary press.
