With the rapid development of laser, electronics and other related technology, laser ranging technology has been widely used in aerospace, geodesy, engineering construction, industrial, military and other fields. Compared with radio and microwave, the influence of laser echo signal received by the target is affected by of different material target. These factors are mainly related to target diameter, distance, radiation angle, surface reflectivity, and these properties of the target material are related to its color, size, texture, surface roughness and so on, which will affect the accuracy of the laser ranging system. Therefore, it is very necessary to research the echo characteristics of different target materials to improve the ranging accuracy of the laser ranging system.This thesis analyzes the echo characteristics of different materials and study the echo characteristics of smooth surface and rough surface. The qualitative analysis is started with the transmit power and detection equation, obtain the reflection characteristics of different material target. Laser ranging adopt the cross-correlation algorithm through analysing the cross correlation theory. By establishing the mathematical model of transmiting and receiving terminal, with the help of the cross-correlation algorithm, through the derivation to get the advantage of the cross correlation measurement methods and simulated by software. Finally, design the laser ranging circuit, set up the experimental test platform. Three groups of experiments are done and the results were analyzed.After setting up the experimental platform, newspaper board, green board and wood board are used as target for experiment. The experiment was divided into three groups, different material target at the same distance, different sampling rate at the same distance, different distance and different material target experiments. After analysing the experimental results, laser ranging by cross-correlation algorithm can improve the measurement accuracy for different target material.
