With the arrival of ubiquitous knowledge environment, people’s reading environment has entered a new historical stage. Lots of commercial virtual reading communities appear, which meets the readers demands of reading experience and reading interaction. On the other hand, according to the Eleventh National Reading Survey report shows that the number of readers has not risen because of lower threshold to read, instead the readers are fewer. People’s reading quality also is worrying. Digital library as the carrier and spreader of culture, its reading service occupy the leading role throughout the operational processes. How to organize and carry out reading service effectively is the key to enhancing the social status of digital library. So it is important to construct reading community of digital libraries. The purpose of this paper is to help promote reading. This paper mainly uses four kinds of methods synthetically such as literature research and analytical induction, contrast analysis, internet survey and the experience summarization. Firstly, this paper introduces the research status of digital library, ubiquitous knowledge environment, reading community, and makes a brief introduction of the external environment as building a digital library ’s reading community. Secondly, according to a questionnaire distributed to library users, the paper analyzes the difficulties that readers encountered when reading books and the requirements that users ask on reading community. Then, by way of online research, the paper summarizes reading communities practice situation at home and abroad. Finally, combined with excellent examples, a reading community that proposed is built from five different areas including resources, capabilities, service, web sites and mobile devices, the role of people. This article exists two innovations. One is to design the reading community’s functions under ubiquitous knowledge environment. Unlike previous reading community that focus just on offline activities or online activities, reading community under ubiquitous knowledge environment community can be "seamless" link-up, online and offline interaction. Second, the paper based on a large number of researches and referencing many cases, put forwards a function model of digital library reading community that through the whole reading process, changes the roles of digital library that only appears on both ends of the reading process(borrowing and returning books).
