Research on the microstructure of a material is an important content in materials science because microstructure and macroscopic properties are closely related. For most metals, it is difficult to directly observe the internal three-dimensional morphology of microstructure. Therefore, through a variety of 3D reconstruction technologies as described, three-dimensional morphology of microstructure of metal materials can be measured and characterized, provided with a vital significance. Two main steps of a serial sectioning-based 3D reconstruction technology were introduced in details, image acquisition and data processing. In image acquisition, the major obstacles and the methods to solve them were discussed. Several techniques and software in image processing were examined for their feasibilities. The recent progress on the serial sectioning-based 3D reconstruction technology was also summarized, as a purpose of putting forth with the key points of the wider usage of this technology. In this paper, by means of serial sectioning in conjunction with computer-aided 3D reconstruction technology, a 3D microstructure model of Mg-Nd alloy was obtained. The microstructure morphology of Mg-Nd alloy is in a new view. The study found that Mg-Nd alloy for non-equilibrium solidification. The metallurgical of central part is uniform, the second phase is very few, can be neglected; the second phase in the edge part of the material is more obvious, the second phase is mainly distributed in the grain boundary, diffusion in the crystal. Microstructure of edge material is a-Mg phase and Mg12Nd phase. The three-dimensional morphology of Mg-Nd alloy observation and quantitative analysis results are basically consistent. Three dimensional structure model into the finite element software for mechanical analysis, the edge of the second phase and the contact surface between grain and second phase had larger stress.
