3D Reconstruction is an interdisciplinary research field, which focus on restoring the three-dimensional information of the object and displaying it in the computer. The existing 3D reconstruction techniques can be used in the digital protection of cultural heritage for a better effect. Many domestic and foreign scholars have made some attempts in this field by proposing algorithms and solutions. However, the existing methods cannot be generally applied in all cases.Geometric modeling based 3D Reconstruction technique is comparatively popular in virtual reality applications. There are some excellent modeling softwares can be used to assist modeling, resulting in a rich styling model with lower complexity. However, this method is inefficient especially in time and labor cost. With the theoretical knowledge of computer vision and computer graphics, the image-based 3D reconstruction technique can provide semi-automatic or automatic 3D reconstruction. This method presents high efficient with low cost, so it must have good prospects. But, this method generated a much more complex model, which causes some limitations in virtual reality applications.In view of the 3D reconstruction problem of the ancient architecture scene, this thesis classifies the cultural relics as three types according to the complexity of model surfaces. Two kinds of techniques have been combined to reconstruct models. The main content of this thesis includes:(1) Propose a classification method to classify different cultural relics according to the complex degree of their surfaces, and then adopt different methods to realize 3D modeling.(2) Summarize and analyze the existing 3D reconstruction methods, put forward the significance and existing problems in the applications of the digital protection for cultural heritage.(3) Reconstruct the different cultural relics in the scene using different methods, including 3D reconstruction method based on geometric modeling, and two methods based on images. Besides, virtual scene roaming system has also been developed.(4) Comparing experiments of three methods have been done to analysis their advantages, disadvantages and scope of application. A reasonable mixed strategy has been proposed which can be used in more applications of the cultural heritage digital protection.In the experiment the virtual roaming system of the Imperial University of Shanxi and the Qiao’s Grand Courtyard have been developed. The result shows that the proposed method can improve the efficiency of traditional geometric modeling with a high sense of reality, which holds the value to popularize and apply.
