Intelligent Traffic System (ITS) is a comprehensive traffic management system which adopts the advanced scientific technology in areas such as traffic management, traffic information service and vehicle control. This system enhances the relation between vehicles, roads and their users, which also serves as a large-scaled, real-time, and comprehensive intelligent traffic management system with high accuracy and efficiency. The development of this system is of great importance to traffic management and control.The final purpose of this thesis is to get the length of motorcades or the number of the vehicles through image-processing algorithms,which are as a system control parameters to control the display of traffic signal. All image algorithms programs will be transplanted into the control board of the traffic lights, which has ARM as the core, in order to control the traffic lights with an intelligent node-type method in a self-adaptive way.This thesis mainly focuses on acquisition and processing algorithm of traffic images,and so the feature of motorcades can be obtained through this image-processing algorithm. The algorithm adopts a pretreatment method that can highlight the vehicles and remove a lot of noises,and get the feature of vehicles with a simple and efficient way of background subtraction.The background subtraction will goes more efficiently with additional background updated model and modified segmentation algorithms.The instantaneity of this system is also improved by analyzing the condition of different lanes.To accomplish the calculation of the length and the number of vehicles,a row-coordinate model was established, and realized the transform of distance between image coordinate system and world coordinate system. The calculation of the length and the number of vehicles provides important parameters for subsequent hardware system implementation.
