All-optical switching is the important development tendency of all-opticalcommunication network in the future. Along with the high-capacity, high-speed datatransmission network becoming more and more complex, the research of new generation ofall-optical network architecture with high-capacity, high-speed, efficiency and reliability, isattracted more and more attention. And that, the research and development on the keytechnology and devices of all-optical switching is of great significance for the developmentof all-optical switching network.This thesis focuses on the research about the all-optical wavelength routing technologybased on arrayed waveguide grating(AWG).We propose a multichannel mass opticalswitching architecture based on the cyclicity of AWG, and designs a scheme of large-scaleall-optical switching system with optical switches, optical waveguide arrays, parallel cyclicarrayed waveguide grating router(AWGR), and the filters.For the ease of devices integration, this design uses the total-internal-reflection all-opticalswitch as the routing switch. After researching the principle of total-internal-reflection all-opticalswitch, we design the drive and control circuit of large-scale optical switches, using constantcurrent driver chips for optical switch. As the need of I/O ports is large, we propose thehardware drive circuit based on field programmable gate array(FPGA).Each part of thehardware circuit is designed carefully. In particular, we put forward some requirements to thedesign of printed circuit board(PCB),which could meet the requirements of multiple opticalswitch current drive.In this design, we make use of the Verilog hardware description language(HDL) to writethe FPGA driver control program, connect the optical transceiver with LVDS, and use theasynchronous first input first output(FIFO)for data cache and clock synchronization. Andthen, we complete the detailed design of every internal module of FPGA, and conduct thesimulation of modules. The results of simulation show that the FPGA program design meetthe requirements of system.In the end of this thesis, we conduct the whole simulation of the system program tovalidate the system’s function, and set up the practical circuit system to debug and test. The results of simulation and test match with the design function, which realize that based on theresearch results in this thesis we could implement the drive and control system of large-scaleoptical switches.
