The drastic growing of telecommunication network capacity has urged the rapid development of optoelectronic devices based on Indium Phosphide (InP). As the requirement for low-cost and low-power-consumption keeps rising and the fabrication process of optoelectronic chips gets mature, discrete optical devices will be replaced by the photonics integration circuit, which monolithically integrates many optical devices onto a single chip, this is the development trend of optoelectronics. Under this background, this thesis makes a deep study of integrated waveguide grating devices.The first part of this thesis is research on echelle grating multiplexer based on InP. an 8 X 500GHz multiplexer is designed and fabricated, merits of low loss and low crosstalk are experimentally verified. Another advantage of the device is its compactness so it has the potential to be integrated with active devices such as lasers and modulators. The device can find its wide usage in wavelength division multiplexing passive opitcal networks (WDM-PONs), data centers and mobile network base stations.Another part of this thesis is wavelength router used in all-optical routing devices. Wavelength router based on echelle grating is proposed, designed and experimentally studied. The reason for big loss difference among different channels of echelle grating wavelength router is theoretically analysed and the big loss difference is pointed out to be caused by the relatively big grating teeth. To solve this problem, we proposed two improved design method, namely rotating facet method and arc-shaped facet method, not only the loss uniformity of different channels is greatly improved, but also the spectral passband is flattened and the bandwidth is increased, both methods have been experimentally verified on 4×4 and 16×16 echelle grating wavelength routers. Additionally, the structure and mask of the echelle grating wavelength router used in our monolithically integrated all-optical router is designed, the functionality of the wavelength router has been verified through the testing results of the all-optical router chip.To fully study wavelength router, this thesis also does research on another wavelength router implementation - arrayed waveguide grating wavelength router. 4×4 and 16×16 arrayed waveguide grating wavelength routers are experimentally demonstrated and device with uniform loss is designed by changing the directions of the output arrayed waveguides. Based on sufficient theoretical and experimental results, we make a comparison between wavelength router based on echelle grating and arrayed waveguide grating and illustrate the circumstances they suits.
