Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) is a new short-distance wirelesscommunication network in the close vicinity of the body, which distributes nodes on orinside the human body or around the body. The MAC controller provides data services andnetwork management services, which affects the performance of the network directly.Research on the MAC has important significance which could promote the universalapplication of WBAN. IEEE802.15.6is the international Wireless Body Area Network(WBAN) standard that supports communications around the human body to serve avariety of medical and nonmedical applications. The standard defines a Medium AccessControl (MAC) layer that supports three types of Physical (PHY) layers. This thesis introduces the background, status, network features and applicationscenarios of wireless body area network. Firstly, IEEE802.15.6protocol is analyzed; itprescribes different frame formats, communication modes, and access mechanisms.Secondly, the system architecture of the MAC controller is proposed, which is based onIEEE802.15.6protocol. Finally, according to the MAC layer functions and the moduledesign idea, the thesis specifies that the MAC controller is divided into transmissionmodule, reception module, the control module and the interface module. The controlmodule implemented by the idea of coprocessor that is the core of MAC controller. Thereception module is responsible for frame de-encapsulation and the transmission module isresponsible for frame encapsulation. SPI bus is defined as the communication interface ofthe MAC and the MCU.The simulation of MAC controller is carried out in the Altera Quartus II softwareenvironment. The FPGA model is EP2C35F672C6. The system clock frequency is100MHz. The send module and receive module clock frequency are25MHz. Total logicelements are879, accounting for3%of the overall. Simulation results show that the basic modules meet the design requirements. The MAC controller’s design and verification havecompleted.
