Power grid accidents such as switch tripping, power line breaking, poles falling down, communication disabled caused by ice covered over the transmission lines. The technology of real-time detecting ice thickness that covered over the transmission lines is meaningful, it can help the staff know the iced condition of the power lines accurately and take measure instantly. Detecting ice thickness plays an important role in today technology, however, there’s no effective way to accomplish it automatically. In this dissertation, an image recognition system for ice thickness has been proposed.This paper introduce that images are captured by a embeded system and image data are transmitted through the GPRS network to the remote server, and then the power sector gets the image data through the server. Ice thickness recognition program fetches data from the sever and write it back to the database.This paper focuses on transmission line ice thickness image recognition algorithm. The method of the gray image segmentation by using the edge operator for edge detection did not work, it can not effectively solve the on-site picture in the background light shadows and complex issues. A novel line search algorithm based on gradient is proposed for detecting thickness of ice covered over the transmission line under complex background. Because images have the characteristics of smoothness or periodicity against the direction of iced cable. First of all, traversal the lines that satisfy condition to get line cluster, then count the gradient of line cluster to complete edge detection of iced cable based on gradient histogram and images characteristics match. In the end, we get the thickness of the covered ice. This algorithm proves effectively under different backgrounds.Meanwhile, user interface and function modules design are completed under visual C++6.0 platform, which realizes the image reading, color graying, image recognition, ice thickness image detecting, image ice thickness manually detecting, ice thickness value judging and data saving functions.
