During the process of hot strip rolling, there are a variety of factors effecting on the delivery thickness of strip. The combination of various thickness control methods is very complex and the control algorithms change frequently. It is not only very difficult but also expensive to test the effects of the factors or algorithms on the quality of strips in practice. In order to reduce the costs and risks of researching, testing and application of new technologies, it is necessary to build a corresponding simulation platform. In this paper, a simulation platform is built to simulate the actual single stand and the actual rolling process of hot strip finish rolling using Siemens S7-400 PLC as the simulation tool. The article first introduces the basic structure and function of the simulation platform as well as the system’s overall design idea, combined with the control object researched. Then according to the overall design idea, a simulation rolling mill model is established based on the finishing mill equipments of a domestic steel plant, including mill stand module, rolling force module, hydraulic system module, and so on. The hydraulic mathematic simulation model of rolling mill system is built after analyzing the mechanism of the system. When building the hydraulic screw-down rolls model, a 3-demension spring oscillation model is used. Combining the dynamic rolling force model, the whole mill system has been built. After that, this paper researches on the realization of the simulation system in the PLC, such as the data interface and communication between different modules, data acquisition and saving, the detailed function of each part, the configuration of WinCC monitor screen, etc. Finally, the simulation results are given with an analysis. The system can reflect the basic trend of the actual rolling line changes and the logical events occurred during the rolling process. It could be used to verify the availability and validity of control strategies. It provides an offline simulation platform for actual hot strip rolling, so it is of great practical significance.
