VoIP (Voice over IP) technology refers to the voice transmission between the traditional telephone (a circuit-switched network) and the Internet connection, or over the Internet directly. Comparing with the conventional Public Switched Data Network (PSDN), more additional functions are available in VoIP with a lower deployment cost With the fast growing of the Internet users and the improvement of chatting and video calling over the Internet, VoIP will become more and more important.Although the current communication platform based on VoIP can enable free calling for users, there still exist some security issues, such as the illegal traffic, illegal registration, and malicious attack. Meanwhile, many communication companies use cacti or other open source software for communications in the existing systems, which can hardly meet the daily monitoring requirements. To deal with this problem, we analyzed the current systems, illustrated the background of VoIP and related content, focused on the monitoring technology for VoIP, and developed the VoIP monitoring system. The contributions of this thesis are presented as follows:1. With the understanding of TCP/IP and correlated protocols, we studied the major protocols and the protocol identification technologies for VoIP, which benefit the further design of VoIP monitoring systems with traffic monitoring, statistical report, and blacklist functions.2. We developed the VoIP monitoring system. Through the requirement analysis, we realized the major functional modules, database design, and system structure. In addition, we presented the implementation procedures for the identification and monitoring of different protocols, as well as the monitoring system interface and the results of performance evaluation.
