At present, marine engineers need to have rich experiences and manage massive amount of specifications and principles in the process of engine room layout design. Cooperating with the engineers from other departments, they coordinate requirements of owners and all design schemes reasonably and repeatedly. Thus, the low degree of intelligence causes the waste of resources, and makes it difficult to share and reuse the design knowledge. Artificial intelligence technology was introduced in engine room layout design, and certain progress has been made by adopting optimization methods along with the knowledge engineering and virtual simulation technology. However, present optimization methods and simulation technology is still difficult to be applied to practice effectively. In recent years, ontology engineering is introduced in the ship design, and the ontological modelling method could represent the knowledge flexibly in all directions.Therefore, aiming at improving the intelligence and making it possible to share and reuse knowledge, this paper researched on a kind of intelligent method in engine room layout design by using semantic Web technology and ontological modelling method. Analyzing the traditional methods, a new type of application ontology construction method was proposed firstly. Then, on the basis of this method, the ontological modelling for engine room layout design was partly worked out by representing knowledge in OWL and SWRL. Finally, the framework of intelligent method in engine room layout design was discussed based on semantic Web technology, and several parts of which was realized in the current technical conditions. At the same time, the previous ontology was verified to be suitabe, effective and consistent, as well as it was proved to be reasonable of the query engine, inference engine and extension mechanism by the examples of this part.
