Occurrence and widespread use of search engines have brought revolutionary breakthrough to the Internet, people can now get the information they need, in an easy way, via search engines. However, higher demands are required over web search as the information is getting more and more diversified and complicated.Particularly in Scientific and Technological (S&T) resources domain, traditional search engines have its limitations—users may find it difficult to submit those key-words description about S&T resources, which is always very professional and complicated. So, the search engines, introduced in the paper, are trying to improve the search operation on S&T resources, which cannot be realized through traditional ones. The new solution will find relevant S&T resources via semantic understanding and eventually shows all-around and precise feedback to the users.The paper mainly summarizes the current condition of search engines, as well as weaknesses of the traditional ones. In view of the fact that traditional search engines always show rough results that may not precisely match the key words, the author thus put forward the concept of a search engine by applying semantic understanding, set up search engine frame on S&T resources and conducted in-depth studies regarding relevant core techniques. The key achievements are as follows:(1)Design a search engine frame based on Ontology. By using this engine, users only need to input rough search information, the system will then analyze and identify its semantic relationship and eventually shows relevant S&T resources information.(2)Set up a small ontology model for the S&T resources domain. The small ontology model not only acts as glossary, but the network that indicates the relations of info data as well. The feature of Ontology describing the conception and the relationship, we can build a key knowledge base of the search engine.(3) Carry out study and research on chief methods and core techniques to set up the search engine, including expertise such as technology of Ontology, semantic understanding and info index. (4)Extend functionalities of current search engine platform, expand application modes of the search engine and optimize limitations of the system so as to meet various needs from users.The search engine for S&T resources designed and described in this paper does not conduct direct search according to key words input by the user, instead, it will search relevant S&T resources. If the users provide rough information and search scope, the system may understand the search requirements via semantic processing and determination of relevant resources, significantly improve the efficiency—with more complete and precise information.Content of the paper is the research achievements from the special subject" Resource Share Platform Technology Standard Making and Implementing"(subject No. 06DZ22038), conducted by Shanghai Science Committee R&D.
