"Weekly Review" And Mobilization Of The Enlightenment Of Public Opinion In May Fourth Period

“Weekly Review” is a small political commentary weekly newspaper founded by ChenDuxiu, Li Dazhao and others in February1918in Beijing. In terms of thinking “WeeklyReview” and “New Youth” keep highly consistent, and cooperate with the “New Youth”jointly to publicity and promote the further development of the press as a major publicpositions of the New Culture Movement, especially in the dissemination of the new cultureidea, Marxism and other aspects of thought,“Weekly Review” has played an irreplaceablerole in guiding public opinion. It had a big impact in China at that time, and therefore,“Weekly Review” plays an important role in news history of modern China. Based on the“Weekly Review” as the research object, this paper starting from the first-hand material, theintegrated use of literature research, historical research, comparative research and otherscientific research methods on the “Weekly Review” text of the systematic analysis andsummary, combined with the “New Youth”,“Xiangjiang Review” and other newspapers andperiodicals, according to the history of the May Fourth Period and during the founderdevelopment process of the “Weekly Review”, depth “Weekly Review” in the introduction ofnew ideas in the spread how to play the mobilization of its role in guiding the enlightenment;analysis of their comments convey what kind of ideological connotations; summarizes thecontribution and its historical position in promoting the development of China’s news mediaindustry.The main content of this paper can be divided into four parts: The first part is acomprehensive description of the system and directions about the “Weekly Review” includethe founder background of the newspaper, operational purpose, writers, column layoutsettings, business model and other aspects, by combing this section we will deepen ourcomprehensive understanding of the “Weekly Review”. The second part discusses thenewspaper mobilization spread enlightenment on the New Culture Movement. This paperfocus on the period of enlightenment thought summed up as opposed to the old feudalideology, promotes democracy, patriotism and the new literature, the paper from the severalaspects, and discusses the “Weekly Review” guidance mobilization of the enlightenment. Thethird part mainly analyzes the “Weekly Review” mobilization of the propaganda of Marxism.The October revolution brought Marxism to China and it had a great intellectual influence,“Weekly Review” was carried out enlightenment spread, including intellectuals against theideas of “problem and doctrine” discussion.“Weekly Review” is the main battlefield of public opinion in this controversy; its reports deepened public understanding of Marxism,finally summed up Weekly Review’s contribution to the spread of Marxism and deficiencies.The fifth part is objective evaluation the history status of the “Weekly Review”. This part isnot only from the newspaper’s speech, editing, etc, and compared with the contrast of the“Xiangjiang Review”, discusses the important role in promoting the development of the newsmedia industry; also from the “News Standard” analysis the ecological change anddevelopment of the news media in May Fourth Period; finally from the newspaper concept,editorial policy, etc, the paper summarizes the important reference for the development of themodern newspaper industry.Through the research of the “Weekly Review” to mobilize enlightenment propaganda inthe May Fourth Movement, this paper argues that,“Weekly Review” concern the reality ofpolitics, promote democracy and science since its founded, and follow the development trendof the times. Weekly Review’s promotions of democracy, helped citizens increasingly get ridof the shackles of the old feudal ideas, and get the ideological liberation; it advocates for newliterature, which makes the creation of Chinese literature more and more active; it appealed topatriotism, inspired the patriotic feelings of the young students, so that united to the MayFourth Movement they made great efforts to change the destiny of the country; later for thespread of Marxism, Chinese intellectuals find a scientific theory as a guide to change the fateof the country. All these indicate that as an important carrier comments political affairs duringthis period,“Weekly Review” not only actively spread the enlightenment of the May FourthPeriod and spread the theory of Marxism, but also rely on its own influence into play a fullstrong mobilization guide. This was not only to the national thought transformation but alsowith the reform of the society development; it both played a good role and made a greatcontribution.
