Manufacturing Execution System (MES) is built as a centralized informationtechnology platform, to serve all manufacturing core activities and processes. It sets belowERP (enterprise resource planning system) and above shop floor control and informationmanagement system, it helps enterprise to achieve the goal of managing productionprocess and quality end to end with high efficiency, accurate and reliable. It effectivelygathers all relevant key information from different production and logistics operation, ittracks and collect objects across its entire process end to end within its life cycle. It enablesenterprises to achieve the objectives of monitoring product life cycle, tracking source ofquality defect, managing real time production process and controlling product quality.Based on my12years of experiences in information system, my experiences bring mylots of knowledge and deep understanding of MES system in consumer electronic industry.The knowledge includes MES system maintenance and support from project managementto system engineer. Various functions and positions helps me have much more thoroughunderstanding of the MES system in the industry. I have witnessed the major changes andmilestones of MES in electronic industry, the changes of MES and its impact to theindustry over time. With increasing demand of setting up informational factories in theindustry, and increasing high customer requirements to track historical and source data, theMES as a system is no longer used to track production data and shop floor data. The focusnow is more on preventing the issues in the operation, even more critical, is to analyzedifferent type of production data in order to prevent product deficiency and improveoperation efficiency. Based on above illustration of the MES development, various typesof customized system were introduced over time. Customized system analyzed eachmodule used in the manufacturing and bring more targeted functions, it highlights theissues and the impact to operation. With the uses of SOA (the module that interface withother applications, it connects different functional modules and services using existing protocols) technology, it enables communication between different systems, datainterchange capabilities, between ERP and MES, also MES and the customer systems,such as EDI. Additionally, new area in MES focusing on production data visualizationhelps operation and management to quickly understand the risk and bottleneck of theoperation. With the help of E-Kanban and variety of dashboards, operation and engineersare now able to identify issues instantly and be able to resolve the issue in time. Datavisualization brings MES capability to a whole new level: a whole new level of factoryoperation efficiency.
