With the rapid development of digital home network and electronic products, it is a developing trend that all kinds of smart appliances are linked to each other via digital home network. Various devices collaborate to achieve resource sharing and interoperability features, so it is an important issue currently facing that how to make effective unified control and rapid sharing of resources with them.In this thesis, the main aim is to study Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) protocol, and to design and implement a multimedia smartphone controller to effectively control devices in the digital home network. Firstlty, this thesis introduces the UPnP protocol stack and related protocols, and how UPnP works, and the development of UPnP at our country and abroad, analyzes the requirements of multimedia smartphone controller based on UPnP technology. And then, the thesis design the overall structure, key features and workflows based on UPnP technology. A remote control module, a local player module and the server module were implemented in the detail design chapter. Finally, the smartphone controller was tested to verify the functionality and usability.The smartphone controller in this thesis can be used to discover UPnP multimedia devices automatically in the digital home network, and it can control the devices, so it can achieve effective management of the UPnP devices. There will be a huge requirement for the application of technology to achieve controlling devices in digital home network using UPnP technology, and it will bring us great convenience and a lot of new experiences in our lives.
