Cloud Computing becomes one of the hottest research area in Internet. The high reliability, scalability, on-demanding billing, virtualization and other attractive features of cloud computing has aroused great attention in all sectors of society, including industry, academia and government. Under the impact of the Internet, Operators are eager to change their network from dumb pipe into a smart one, which will help them to become the leader of platform operator. Taking this as an opportunity, combing the advantages of cloud computing platform with traditional telecommunications business systems, and building a telecom cloud platform are the future of operators.In the overall telecom cloud platform, the media server plays a vital role. From simple voice calls to customizable video conferences, from entrance check subsystems to the well-known12306telephone booking services, none of these could function without media server. However, the disadvantages of traditional hardware media server, such as hard to expand and maintain, etc., make it difficult to deploy in the cloud telecom platform. Therefore, this paper aims to develop a software media server with rich media capabilities, which not only meets the traditional media server standard, but also combines the characteristics of telecom cloud platform.Through the investigation of traditional media server and research on cloud computing, this system will includes the following functionalities. Provide the control interface, including traditional SIP calls, as well as Web Service calls for Internet. Provide rich media features including two party session, meeting, IVR media interaction. Research and improve audio segmentation algorithm to extract a meeting summary. On the basis of traditional media features, design and implement a new function of continuous media stream, which can improve user experience. Then, based on the functionality and goals of the system, the paper decides on detailed technical routes and completes the overall architecture of the system. The overall architecture adopts a hierarchical design and elaborates the interactions between each layer through several typical scenarios. For modules within the overall architecture, detailed inner working mechanism of each module is introduced, with an emphasis on the realization of various functional modules. In the end, the system and function of each module are verified and tested, the results show that the system functionality and performance have accorded with the expected objectives.
