With the rapid development of the Internet in recent years, the network size is expanding very fast and multimedia applications are coming out constantly, which lead to the exploding of network traffic and supra-linear expanding of routing table. Meanwhile, the large quantity of mobile applications raises higher requirements in mobility support and network security. The current patch-type schemes, as P2P (Peer to Peer) and CDN (Content Delivery Network), are aimed at function-completing, but can’t solve the problem fundamentally. ICN (Information-Centric Networking) is an innovative scheme, which uses content names instead of IP address in the network layer. Internet users pay more attention to the content itself and ICN meets their real needs and the requirement of content retrieval and delivery in the network. This paper firstly describes the development status and existing problems of IP networks, and introduces several "evolved" solutions. Then give an overview of the different ICN architecture, including its naming, routing, caching, and security key technologies. We use NDN (Named Data Networking) as an example to give detailed analysis of its design principle, package and table types and communication processes, etc. What’s more, its superiority over IP networks is given through simple simulations.Secondly, this paper introduces the ICN-based routing policy in MANETs (Mobile Ad-hoc Networks), makes classify according to its route establishment process, and analyzes the advantages and shortcomings of different categories. Then an improved routing strategy, BREB (Best Route Error Broadcast), is presented against these deficiencies. BREB takes both reducing communication overhead and improving stability of the routing into consideration comprehensively. It monitors the state of link and adjusts the routing with dynamic adaptive algorithm in real time. The design of BREB is divided into three parts, content discovery, communication through best path and dynamically routing adjustment. And we also give detailed information of its package, table types and communication process. On this basis, the paper implements BREB strategy on the simulation platform ndnSIM and shows the updating process of its design. We verify the route-selecting function of BREB and make comparison with other strategies using the modified simulation platform. Simulation results show that, BREB has an advantage of28.5%over LFBL in average Data throughput, whereas the average download time is8.9%lower. The performance of BREB is more stable, as showing smaller changes over time. Finally, the caching strategy of ICN is introduced and its impact on the routing performance is analyzed with the modified simulation platform. A better caching strategy is considered to be the new direction of improving the routing performance in the future.
