Coal is the major source of energy in our country. Coal mine safety is the main part of energy security. Coalmine accident causes serious property damage and casualties. It calls for a better coalmine monitoring and communication system. Traditional coalmine security monitoring system is homogeneous system, heterogeneous system collects different kinds of signals,and has higher judgment accuracy,longer lifetime and better reliability.This paper summarizes the existing coalmine security monitoring and communication system. Then a new coalmine security monitoring system which is based on wireless sensor networks is designed. The communication function is also integrated in the system, where can support emergency communication in the coalmine.This paper introduces the voice compression and coding technique and the interface of wireless sensor networks. The major contributions of this paper can be concluded as follows:voice compressing technique is investigated; the software and hardware design of the system is implemented; the operation system is immigrated.The system can transmit high bit rate voice signal in low bandwidth wireless sensor networks through voice compressing technology. The sensor signal and voice signal can be transmitted in the network simultaneously. The system proposed in this paper can also be used in other scenarios, and has a wide range of applications.
