Wireless sensor network is a kind of network composed of a large number of sensor nodes, which are deployed in ad hoc. The network security problem is an important issue to restrict the development of wireless sensor networks and it attracts more and more researches. The important issue that needed to be solved urgently is the key management of wireless sensor networks. An effective key management method can not only ensure the secure and reliable communication between the nodes of WSN, the more important thing is that the improvement of the security could make the application domain more extensively. Most key management methods consider that the network is usually composed of the sensor nodes with the same capability. However, recent researches indicate that heterogeneous wireless sensor networks have an advantage in the extension of the life cycle of the network, the improvement of the connectivity and security of network, the reduction of communication overhead between sensor nodes. Therefore, it is very important to research the key management method of the heterogeneous wireless sensor networks.Firstly, this paper summarizes the security problems of wireless sensor networks, introduces the state of art research of key management methods of heterogeneous wireless sensor network and makes a survey about key management of wireless sensor networks including the description of the problem of the key management, the evaluation metrics of the key management and some typical key management methods.Then, we introduce a common cluster model of heterogeneous sensor networks, analyses and verifies a private key agreement and secure communication based on Elliptic Curve Public Key Encryption Algorithm. We also give the key storage space analysis and security assessment of this method through the simulation experiments. The results show that Elliptic Curve Public Key Encryption Algorithm has a good performance in communication encryption between nodes of wireless sensor network.As for the problem of the uneven energy consumption between sensor nodes, this paper gives an efficient grid clustering and routing protocol based on the improvement of the existing chessboard clustering. We give the performance evaluation of the improved protocol. The research results indicate that this protocol has a good performance in the improvement of life cycle and the reduction of total energy consumption.Existing researches indicate that sensor nodes always communicate with a small part of their neighbor nodes. To make full use of this feature, this paper proposes a routing driven key management method of the heterogeneous wireless sensor networks with the combination of Elliptic Curve Public Key Encryption Algorithm and grid clustering routing protocol. Simulation results show that the method is not only good at reducing the number of keys loaded in sensor nodes, but also has a good resistance for the capture attack of intruders.
