The detection methods of small and weak target on water mainly include infraredimaging technology, radar imaging technology and optical imaging technology. Butbecause of the complexity of the optical environment on surface of water, it makes theexisting several imaging technology all have some shortcomings in the process of targetdetection. Therefore, there is an urgent need to put forward a new method to effectivelydetect small and weak targets on surface of water. Based on this situation, the papersubmits a weak and small target approach based on artificial dragonfly compound eye.Many documents have proved that dragonfly compound eye has obvious characteristics ofpolarized light, and it can detect the surface of water and the targets on water accurately.The new method uses the polarization characteristics of dragonfly compound eye to getpolarized image of targets, and finish the weak small targets detection.The main research work is summed up as:This paper first introduces the related theory of compound eye of insect in nature. Itmainly includes the physiological and physical properties of insect compound eye, and thecomposition and application of visual system of artificial compound eye. And then thispaper introduces the related theory of polarization imaging technology and describes indetail the polarized light sensitivity of the dragonfly compound eye and the application ofpolarization imaging technology in small and weak target detection. It establishes thestructure frame of the polarization imaging optical system and the image processingsystem.The key point of this paper is the target detection experiment part based on the newdetection algorithm. We first need to select a certain filter method and segmentationmethod to deal with the polarization and intensity images. After a large number ofexperimental analysis, we choose the image filtering method based on wavelet transform,and the threshold segmentation method based on the Otsu algorithm for image processing,and good image effects have been achieved in the experiment.The experimental results have showed that the polarization degree image has largercontrast, and the edge information of small and weak targets are more clear in the imagecompared with the light intensity images. Using the polarization degree image we caneasier tell the small targets from the background. And the accuracy rate of the targetdetection has been greatly increased. Then it has verified the effectiveness of the newtarget detection method proposed in this paper.
