The dim targets detection in infrared images is one of the key techniques in military weapon system. Making use of infrared image to realize the automatic target examination, recognition and tracking is the main development direction in equipments of modern military weapons and it has been the subject of intense investigation in recently years. For the influences of atmospheric heat radiation and detector noise, the weak targets extremely submerge in the background noise. The basic problem inherent to extent the detection range is the detection of weak, low observable and complex background. In order to improve the SNR of images and suppress the background clutter, in this paper, we have analyzed the charactering of small target, noise and background clutter. Then we recommend some preprocessing algorithms and compare the effect of them. Each way has its own advantage and disadvantage, we can choose the right way by the actual scene and the expectation.Because it's hard to ensure the detection with only one frame, we also have studied the algorithm with image sequences in this paper. Multistage hypothesis test algorithm is used to prune a tree-structured list of cadidate trajectory segment at each pixel, and the trajectory contain an object is accepted in the end. In this paper, we analyze this algorithm, and confirm this method is an effective weak targets detection algorithm through the simulations.For the detection of weak target, we analyze another track before detect algorithm. This paper exactly analyze the principle of dynamic programming algorithm and improve the algorithm on the basis of simulations. It is an effective weak targets detection algorithm. Then, analyze an update algorithm combining the multistage threshholds of MHT with DP theory. This improved method can accurately detect weak targets, at the same time, it save the memory and computation of system.Finally, a kind of software of tracking before detection of weak target is developed with VC++. Several basic preprocessing algorithms and the improved method are implemented by it. The effect of these new methods in this dissertation is validated by using the software.
