In recent years, the3D stereo display technology has become a thriving and emerging industry. Compared with the2D display, stereo display technology makes the images on the screen more stereoscopic, realistic and is closer to the real feelings of human eyes for reality. This gives viewers unprecedented visual sense. Therefore, the three dimensional display is generally used in virtual reality,3D TV, etc. At the same time it is also applied widely in the aspect of precision measurement, medical, artistic image representation and mechanical engineering. However, there are many factors to limit the popularization and development of3D technology, one of the most popular is visual fatigue. The existence of visual fatigue is not conducive to human health, but also not conducive to the long-term development of the3D technology. The development and application of three dimensional display technology are analyzed in this paper. And it is pointed out that the research of visual fatigue for stereoscopic technology development is very important. The study shows that four factors are mainly taken into account, the geometry skewed of left and right image, poor electrical properties of left and right image, contradiction between convergence and accommodation, and excessive parallax and discontinuous change of parallax in image. This paper mainly focuses on the former two factors, because these two factors are in connection with human physiological characteristics and principle of stereo imaging. Then the latter two factors are hardware problem. In this paper, the description of people’s physiology structure and visual characteristic show the basic principle that human eye how to watch stereo images. This is the subjective reason of the visual fatigue from the perspective of human physiology. At the same time, the existing stereo display technologies are introduced, and analyzed why all kinds of3D display type can lead to visual fatigue. Under the condition of existing resources, double parallax three-dimensional videos are selected to be the research object. Three objective fatigue factors are come up with and they affect the visual sense of human eye based on the depth image--spatial characteristics, temporal characteristics and scene movement characteristics. They explain the reasons of visual fatigue from different aspects. Then subjective experiment is conducted to verify the rationality of the objective results and get the statistics of different experimental results. The comparison of error rate for proofread work before and after the movie qualitatively analyzes the human eye fatigue, and grading results quantitatively reflects the human’s subjective feeling of fatigue. After the statistics of subjective and objective test results for the same stereo sources, and the calculation of correlation, it is proved that there is a good consistency between them. Finally some measures have been put forward which can slow down the fatigue when viewers watch stereoscopic videos.
