The telecom operator’s management systems for maintenaning optical networks do not have a unified surface and a unified network management interface, thus different network management systems of telecom operators can not connect with each other. It will be a great waste, such as a waste of human resources, system developing, and repetitive labors for maintenance. The root reason for this phenomenon is that different telecom operators design network management systems based on their own demands. Now TCP/IP protocol has been widespreadly used, and most network devices of main manufacturers support TCP/IP protocol. So the network management system based on SNMP protocol can run on most network devices. Based on this, this paper propose a network management system based on SNMP protocol, and this system will provide a unified management surface. For another part, this paper also propose a new design of switching node in optical networks to release massive labor operation in traditional optical networks and to gain a high reliability of the networks.The contents for this paper are divided into two parts, one for the design of network management based SNMP protocol, another for the design of switching nodes controlled by intelligent network management system. Firstly, the network management system based on SNMP protocol run well in TCP/IP networks and have good feasibility and expandability. Meanwhile, this management system provide succinct operation surface. This part also includes the propose of centralized network management system, layered and moduled design and the design of interfaces of the system. Secondly, the other part includes the design of switching matrix in optical networks and interfaces between switching nodes and management system.The achievments of this paper are as following:Firstly, this paper proposes a network management system based on SNMP protocol which provides a way to solve the problem of operating all network devices.Secondly, this paper proposes a design of switching nodes in optical networks controlled by intelligent network management systems.
