The. traditional Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is mainly used to transport the discrete environment data, such as temperature, humidity and luminance etc. However, with the rapid development of times, people want more from WSNs, traditional discrete environment data can’t satisfy the demands of people. People want to know more dynamic environment data from the WSNs, such as voice, picture etc. The changing of the data type requires the changing of the implement of the WSNs to adapt the new data type. As the changing of the data, the traditional WSNs develop to multimedia sensor networks (MWSNs). The most important point to adapt the new data type is to develop an adaptive gateway for the network. In the same time, as the job of the gateway, it needs to offer an open interface for different protocols to connect to the network.Based on the sufficient research and analyses on the MWSNs, this paper designs and implements an efficient gateway on the MWSNs which supports multi-protocols accessing and transporting discrete and stream data.This paper firstly does a research on the gateway to make it open for different protocols accessing, and then proposes a method to implement it. In this way, it is no need to update the gateway software when devices connect to the network using a new accessing protocol, just need to re-configure the gateway and add the corresponding hardware if necessary. In that way, the robustness and transplantation of the gateway can be guaranteed. Then, this paper gives a test on the implement of the gateway to guarantee the correctness.Secondly, this paper also studies on the gateway in the MWSNs to make it efficiently transform the type of the environment data and store the data. The gateway in the MWSNs not only needs to efficiently transform and store the discrete environment data, but also needs to do the same to the stream environment data. This paper proposes a method to make the gateway efficiently transform and store the discrete and stream environment data, and then gives a test on this method to guarantee the correctness.So far, the gateway is deployed in BUPT and work well.
