WCDMA In-Building Coverage System (ICS) is an important part of the overall WCDMA system. While internet has become part of our everyday life, mobile devices sometimes have trouble properly reaching the carrier’s macro network when it comes to structures such as large office buildings and subway stations, etc. The dedicated In-Building Coverage System, developed on the basis of WCDMA technology, is to provide the best overall coverage and user perception for mobile subscribers.1. This thesis focuses on the study of increasing the overall system capacity and optimizing equipment selection by deploying In-Building Coverage System to three representative indoor locations. A shopping mall, a subway station, and a university campus were strategically selected based on their geographic and demographic analysis and existing issue analysis.2. Deployment of ICS at the shopping center was to solve the problem of indoor and outdoor coverage switch by avoiding interference between in-building and outdoor signals.3. In the case of the selected subway station, the deployed ICS provided below ground level coverage that could ensure signal switch when trains go in and out of the station and effectively lowered the dropped-call rate (DCR).4. For the University campus site, ICS helped to meet different network demands for peak and off-peak hours for indoor campus buildings such as lab building and gym.5. Subsequent network testing proved that a good coverage is in place for the above three sites. As an extension to the outdoor cellular network, the in-building system can not only operate on its own for a specific area but also coordinate with the outdoor system as a whole. The empirical data obtained from this thesis could benefit future best practice in implementing In-building Coverage Systems.
