With the continuous development of antenna applications, the endfire antenna hasbeen widely used, from the initial communication field, and now the navigation, electronicwarfare, and radar and so on. In practical applications, some mounting platform requireshigher aerodynamic performance on antenna system. The planar end-fire antenna cansatisfy the stringent aerodynamic requirements because of its small size on thickness andcan be conformal with the platform when necessary.Therefore, research on novel planarend-fire structure has great significance and application value. This paper is based on plateend-fire antenna and it summarizes the design methods and radiation law of planar end-fireantenna. Research on planar end-fire antenna array is done in this paper, Specific contentincludes the following sections:For planar end-fire structure, this paper chooses two types of antennas as the researchobjects, one is printed planar quasi-Yagi antenna. Its working principle is nearly same withthe Yagi-Uda antenna, and can be analyzed by creating a mathematical model of theantenna through the induced electromotive force method and Hallen equation method.Antenna characteristics can be drawn from the cell current amplitude and phase distribution,so it is with further analysis of the radiation characteristics.The other type is planarmicrostrip patch antenna Yagi, and it’s the combination of Yagi-Uda antenna and microstripantenna.This paper focuses on three aspects of each type of the antennas including theradiation characteristics, the frequency band characteristics and the coupling effects of thearray. This paper builds the two types of plane end-fire antenna models, and then analyzehow the number of the patchs, the size of the patch, the spacing and other structuraldimensions influence the radiation and frequency band characteristics.Through theoreticalanalysis and simulations this paper optimize an antenna unit with relatively goodperformances, and then studies on arraying methods and mutual coupling effects.For the research of antenna array, this paper builds the array model with the units inthree directions, they are along the axial direction and normal direction of the antenna withthe electromagnetic simulation software. Analyzing how the array parameters influence thecurrent distribution, the impedance characteristics and the electric energy distribution in thearray. Finally, this paper summarize the mutual coupling effect of the array, and discuss the influence of the coupling effect to the performance of the array.
