Frequency selective surface (FSS) is a two-dimensional periodic array structure, its essence is an electromagnetic space filter, FSS and electromagnetic wave in interactions could show band-pass or resistance of the electromagnetic wave transmission characteristics obviously. The well frequency selection and polarization selection characteristics of FSS could control electromagnetic wave transmission and reflection effectively, along with the science and technology progress and development, FSS already more and more used in the microwave, infrared and visible wave bands.In recent years, the scholars and research institutions at home and abroad carry on various in-depth researches and analysis to FSS, the understanding of the various characteristics of FSS is also perfect day by day. At present, how to effectively use electromagnetic wave transmission characteristics of FSS and in order to make it could better applied to practical production which has already become the main research direction of FSS. Aiming at FSS in practical application problems, the article mainly from the following several aspects launched the analysis and simulation design:1、When FSS used in radome, because of electromagnetic wave in through the band-pass type FSS caused of harmonic effect and both interactions produce surface wave effects, could produce grating lobes in the filtering process. If the locations of the grating lobes appear in enemy radar exploration in frequency, FSS will up less than stealth role. Aiming at the grating lobes problems when the band-pass type FSS applied to radome, the article through numerical calculation and simulation analysis and design the optimization single layer’s dielectric-loaded double layers’FSS aperture array structure with well performance and based on this improved the double layers’ dielectric-loaded three layers’FSS aperture array structure, effective solution to the problems of premature and successive appearance of various grating lobes in practice, and give a detailed reseach of the process and design simulation results.2、Dual-frequency and multi-frequency FSS structure is always the hot spot in FSS research area. Through the structure design change makes transmission characteristics of FSS present dual-frequency and multi-frequency characteristics has very important practical value. For a long time, people research and design dual-frequency and multi-frequency FSS structure often only aim at single or special structure, it has not been formed the law of the unity of any structure can be designed to dual-frequency and multi-frequency FSS, people design FSS which according with certain choose frequency characteristics rule has become a important derection that technical personnel research and design FSS. This article aims at the theory of fractal structure in application of FSS has carried on research. And with the classic "Y" pattern and cross pattern as an example, simulation and design their fractal structure respectively, through the simulation results of detailed analysis obtained the characteristics and laws of fractal structure in application of FSS, which has certain directive significance for fractal theory in application of FSS.3、Band-pass type FSS in application of airborne or carrier radomes which has stealth role for planes or warships. How to embed FSS structure in radomes in order to obtain well filtering characteristic is an important problem in application of FSS. This article through detailed analysis of type A sandwich structure of common radome, keeping mechanical characteristics of sandwich structure are not affected, in this condition, simulation and design a optimized type A sandwich FSS radome which has dual-frequency band-pass characteristic, the simulation results indicate that this structure to achieve the mechanical and filtering caracteristics that practical required.4、According to electromagnetic wave transmssion characteristic of FSS, through improve its structure to form high impedance surface or slow wave structure, which can be used to design antenna. Using slow wave structure to change phase velocity of electromagnetic wave should reduce the antenna design level, improve its return loss, reduce the antenna RCS at the same time. This article uses the slow wave structure which is formed by improved band-pass FSS to design the ground plane of PIFA microstrip patch antenna, and simulated the result, analysis found that the improved band-pass FSS has important application value for design antenna structure and improve antenna performance.
