Optical switch is one kind of important optical component in optical fibercommunication system. It has one or more selectable transmission ports, and can realizeswitching or other logical operation of optical signals in the optical transmission systemor integrated optical parts. The large-capacity optical switching fiber network requiresthe optical switches to be smaller size, lighter weight, lower cost, and higher reliability.Being low insertion loss, low cross-talk, low polarization sensitivity and high extinctionratio, mechanical optical switch is widely used in optical fiber communication system.This thesis discussed about the structural design and capability of a new reflectionoptical switch. The switch is constituted with fiber tip assembly, C-lens, speculum, and amovable wedge, which is driven to achieve optical path switching by a magnetic force ofrelay. The advantage of this design is small size and light weigh. The input and outputfibers locate at the same side of the device, which make it easier for integration and moreconvenient for module upgrading. The size of the entire module is therefore reduced.We describe the beam coupling performance based on the characteristic parameter ofGaussian beam and propose a new reflection optical switch design. Firstly, weestablished the optical system model using Zemax software, and simulations withvarious optical parameters are carried out, which verify the feasibility of this design.Secondly, based on the detail analysis of multiple error sources, the fabrication andassembly processes of optical components are made. The reliability of the optical switchis ensured by careful material selection, fabrication process design, assembly andpackaging. Finally, we carried out the test of the product during and after the assemblyprocess, and the test data were collected for detail analysis. The reflection optical switchsuccessfully passed the Bellcore standard reliability testing and met the expected designgoal.
