Nowadays, digital technology plays a significant role in our daily life. Chineseartists and designers are working hard to reach a harmony between art and technology.The paper focuses on the application of digital technology on Chinese traditionallandscape painting and ink painting. The author tries to find a perfect balance betweenart and technology and to grant a new feature to Chinese traditional ink painting.The paper consists of four parts.The first part mainly deals with landscape paining in Chinese ink paining. Thediscussion focuses on the features, characteristics and painting skills of it.The second part primarily talks about animation in Chinese ink painting. Theauthor compares the early stage hand-made ink painting animation with digital-made2-D and3-D ink painting animation in the history of Chinese ink painting. Byrevealing the advantages and disadvantages of ink painting animation.The third part is the main body of the paper, focusing on the specific usage ofdigital technology in ink painting animation. The discussion covers a variety of fields,including: comparison between several software and their usage in ink paintinganimation, interaction between3-D model and texture map; arrangements of spatiallevels, cavalier perspective in landscape painting, analysis on material source andoptimization of the model.The fourth part concludes the methods of ink painting animation introduced inthe paper and points out the possible applications, including but not limited to:adopting styles that are suitable to digital technology, new methods of modeling andmapping, skills of spatial arrangement.In the meantime, the author produced a short ink painting animation video. Thevideo further discusses the possible application of digital technology in the traditionalink painting, including the patterns for model setting, skills in texture mapping,dynamics between void and solid and etc. Hopefully, the paper will shed some lighton the future application and development of digital technology on Chinese inkpainting animation.
