Overseas Chinese media always plays an important role on spreading Chinese culture, fightingfor Chinese nation’s rights and guiding Chinese descendants to inherit Chinese culture. As ancrucial part of overseas Chinese media, Chinese newspaper in Britain first appeared in1894.After more than100years of development, Chinese newspaper in Britain have been at a highlevel in quantity and quality. Throughout the domestic and foreign researches on the Chinesenewspaper in Britain, most researches focused on the macroscopic discussion and the researchresults were not rich.Under the western culture background, what kind of representation does the Chinese newspaperin Britain present? How do they build “shared meaning/shared concept map”? How does the“shared meaning/shared concept map” influence people’s consciousness and behavior?With these questions, this paper reviews the development of Chinese newspaper in Britain at first.And then, this paper selects the representatives of Chinese newspaper in Britain, The ChineseWeekly, as a case study. Reference to cultural circle and representation theory which proposed byStuart hall, this paper offer a new perfective for us to learn the nature of the traditional media,The Chinese Weekly. A case study on The Chinese Weekly seems to reveal that the mediarepresents itself by means of content production and operation, represents significantly Chineseidentity and affects the conscious, behavior of audience to build the culture identity.
