The massive importing of foreign TV formats in2013has declared the impotantstatus of TV format in the Chinese TV industry. In the international field, the tradingof TV formats had taken shape not too long ago, but has made a spectacular progressin market size and development framework. However, China still remains in thebackward condition because of the late start and low level. Therefore China’s TVindustry nowadays has a strong dependency upon importing TV format, but barelyhad formats that can be sold abroad. Under this circumstance, this thesis has clearedup the concept, common specialties and attached values of TV formats. Then on thatbasis, deep studies has been carried out in the two aspects of import and localization,in order to analyze the development dilemma and directions of the TV industry. Themassive and intensive importing of foreign formats has brought both positive andnegative influences to the industry, but has also inevitably caused chaos in thedomestic market. The lack of creativity and the growing sluggishness are majordifficulties that the Chinese TV production teams need to conquer at the present stage.However, the capability of independent innovation cannot be improved in a short time.Importing formats has marked a starting point, while the localization of formats hasbecome a good way to build up and improve innovation. Production teams shouldcomprehend the audience demands, cultural context and social mentality specificallyin this process. After learning the lesson taught by foreign TV formats, governmentdepartments should also set relevant polices to promote the development of TVinnovation.
