Optical circulator is one of the nonreciprocal functional optical passive deviceswith3ports at least, allow the signal unidirectional transit from a port to another portonly. Optical circulator has widely applications, such as fiber communications,wireless local area network and radar systems. It can be used as coupler, isolator andso on.In currently marketing, it is important to miniaturization, low cost, stability, andintegration. Based on the requirements, the circulator array was researched anddeveloped to meet the marketing.There are6chapters in this thesis:Chapter1introduced the current development status and applications of opticalcirculator.Chapter2studied the working principle and basic structure of optical circulator,at the same time, the main technical parameters have been analyzed, it is a greattheory support for optimize the design of the circulator array.Chapter3studied the structure of the optical circulator array. In order to get betterinsertion loss and temperature properties, the circulator core has been symmetricaldesigned. The GRIN Lens and high precision birefringence crystal YVO4have beenselected.Chapter4designed and created drawings for each components of the circulatorarray. When the circulator is assembling, the suitable equipments have been selected.Based on the precision adjustment, the requested high properties are achieved.Chapter5made inspection and analysis for main technical parameters, insertionloss, isolation, PMD and so on. The insertion loss is less than0.4dB, isolation is morethan50dB, PMD is less than0.018ps. The properties are greatly improved. Theinspection results showed the steady production process, better properties, feasibility,and suitable for volume production.Chapter6is the summary of the thesis.Circulator array has many advantages, such as the miniaturization, smallpackaging, low cost, integration, good uniformity, and fit for volume manufacture.Several signals can be transited in a line. Experimental research of circulator array is carried out. The high yields and low costs in mass production. The passivecomponents are important parts in broadband LAN, the marketing is pretty good.
