In the past years, the Diaoyu Islands has been a hot topic in Southeast Asia andeven in the world. It seems that this dispute is only a territorial problem betweenChina and Japan, but through thorough analysis, we will find it has a closerelationship with the United States and even the United States plays a greater role thanJapan in the dispute.The thesis analyzes the reports from People’s Daily and New York Times toreveal their characteristics and concerns of the two papers. The thesis choice toanalyzes People’s Daily and New York Times have reported on Diaoyu Island fromAugust2012to March2013, after deeply comparatively analysis, we can discoveredthat there are some obviously differences in reporting amounts and time, reportingresources and attitude, agenda setting and theme expression. Due to these differences,we could figure it out the different attitude of China and the Unite States towards theDiaoyu Island. The underlying reasons which make differences between People’sDaily and New York Times different relationship of three countries, distinct conceptof ideology, different state system, traditional culture and beliefs. The Diaoyu Islandsissue related to Chinese territorial sovereignty. People’s Daily’s reports which isconsistent with national policies and interests. New York Times’ reports must highlyrealize the sensitivity over the dispute, it should not only strongly support the Japan asan ally, but also not turn against with China.There are several inspiration which we can learn from the comparatively analysisabout Diaoyu island between People’s Daily and New York Times: firstly, Newsreport which related international dispute or sensitive topic, devote to enrich theadministrative level of reporting and set up objective news discourse system; secondly,make the reporting concept diversification by means of setting up agenda skillfully;thirdly, strengthen the media autonomy and pay much more attention to the objectiveof news report; last but not the least, establish the newest idea of internationalcommunication and strive keep to the regular pattern of international communication.
