As a hotspot technology, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have attracted many domestic and overseas researchers. In a WSN, the energy of sensor nodes is usually supplied by battery, which is extremely limited. Moreover, it’s unpractical to replace the battery because the bad deployed environment or the large amount of deployed nodes. Therefore, how to efficiently use the energy is one of the key research problems of WSNs. In this paper, we focus on the energy efficiency technology of data collection. Our researches are mainly consisting of two parts, which are data collection technology in static WSNs and data collection technology in WSNs based on mobile sink. For the research of static network data collection, it’s essential to maximum the network life via reasonable design of network topology and efficient data collection algorithm under the condition of restricted energy. Aiming at this problem, we put forward a data collection algorithm applying to static WSNs, called the precise data collection algorithm based on minimum cost path (PDC-MCP). PDC-MC uses the main design idea of Dijkstra algorithm, in which every sensor node calculates the minimum cost path to the sink through simultaneously considering the link cost and node cost. And then all of the sensor nodes send their data to the sink steadily after the network topology has been set up. For evaluating the performance of PDC-MCP algorithm, we make comparisons with the Dijkstra algorithm and MAXLAT algorithm. The simulation results show that the PDC-MCP algorithm can get a longer network lifetime under the condition of different number of nodes and communication radius. It is the mobility of the sink that can profoundly reduce the energy consumption of nodes and promote the lifetime of the whole network by moving next to the sensor nodes to collect data. In this paper, we put forward a data collection strategy applying to periodic business based on mobile sink one-hop model, called the data collection strategy based on dominating set and ant colony algorithm (DC-DSAC). DC-DSAC includes three steps:1) using a load balancing reverse heuristic algorithm to select the set of collection points;2) using ant colony algorithm to plan the cruise path for the sink;3) the sink accesses to the collection points periodically and collect data by one-hop. For evaluating the performance of DC-DSAC strategy, we make comparisons with the Random strategy. The simulation results show that the DC-DSAC strategy can get a longer network lifetime and has higher energy efficiency. Moreover, it has well scalability, which can be extended to multiple mobile sink for data collection, prolonging the network lifetime further. In this paper, we study the energy efficiency technology of data collection in static WSNs and based on mobile sink WSNs through theoretical analysis and MATLAB simulation. The results of these researches will provide theoretical support for energy-saving data collection applications.
