For conventional ship industry, with defect of long production cycle, low productivity andpollution, etc., in order to make the development of the shipbuilding industry constantly, requiresit to introduce new ideas and technology, virtual reality technology is a good choice. In recentyears, collaborative design based on distributed virtual reality technology and3D virtualprototyping presentation as a new direction of engineering design, allowing the design, use, andmaintenance personnel to participate in product design, not only can greatly improve thedevelopment efficiency but also improve the quality of the product. In addition, theestablishment of a Web-based engineering training systems and network of training is necessary. All this needs the support of Web3D virtual reality technology. In this paper, compare various methods of Web3D virtual reality technology, elaboratedtheir disadvantages. To compensate for the shortcomings of various development methods, promoting virtual reality technology in the shipbuilding industry, use Java Swing and I/Oprogramming to implement a software platform, by importing Obj model via this softwareplatform can build virtual reality scenes of Java3D. This platform has a simple graphical userinterface, can easily and quickly build a Web3D virtual reality scenarios, the Java3D codegenerated by the platform can be secondary programming. The paper take ABB ’s XO pod propulsion as a example, use3ds Max to modeling. Throughrealized Web3D virtual reality platform by importing pod propulsion Obj model and generates apod propulsion Web3D virtual reality scene, basically verify the availability of this Web3Dplatform. Finally, through secondary programming realized the pod propulsion virtualmanipulation.
