Ground penetrating radar (Ground Penetrating Radar, referred GPR), also known as the geological radar, is a detection method to determine the distribution of subsurface using radio waves (frequency range from1MHz~1GHz). In recent years, increasingly sophisticated theoretical results led to the rapid development of ground-penetrating radar technology. The ground penetrating radar has the advantages of high efficiency detection and non-destructive, it has been widely used in many fields. However, due to the complexity and ground-penetrating radar to detect subsurface region specificity, the more stringent requirements of its antenna, in view of the current part of GPR to detect the existence of the resolution is not high, or improve the resolution and defect detecting distance will be substantially reduced, intended to improve antenna system of ground penetrating radar, instead of the traditional ground penetrating radar antenna for phased array antenna, full use of the advantages of the phased array antenna-to form a directional beam ability, strong anti-interference and so on. Research and design of the phased array antenna for a ground penetrating radar system by the new bow-tie antenna elements.This paper first reviews the development history of ground penetrating radar, briefly introduced the current status of research at home and abroad, and describes the background and significance of this research. Then details the basic principle and system components of ground penetrating radar, and systematically expounded its detection performance indicators, and then study the basic components of a phased array antenna, scanning principle and the main parameters, its characteristics are summarized, finally, through the analysis of ground penetrating radar antenna type, to design a phased array antenna system and optimization and simulation.This paper using the new bow-tie antenna element structure, the two radiating elements of the antenna elements located on opposite sides of the dielectric plate, carried by a parallel feed line, on the basis of the antenna unit, the use of parallel lines parallel feeding, composed of simple1×2and2×2of the antenna array. And the2×2antenna array as an example, using Ansoft HFSS antenna simulation software to model the antenna and optimize the design of parameters, finally carries on the simulation, the simulation results show, the antenna array VSWR<2relative bandwidth reaches 76.25%, return loss (working frequency is610MHz, the value of the S11parameter is-15.16dB), comply with the design requirements, which can be well used in ground penetrating radar system.
