Studies Of Xie Jishi And His The Notes Of Northwest Region

Xie Jishi lived from the27th year of the reign of Qing EmperorKangxi(1688) to the20th year of the reign of Qing Emperor Qianlong(1756), he had ups and downs in his life, which made him a legendaryhistorical character. His The Notes of Northwest Region was written betweenthe4th year of the reign of Qing Emperor Yongzheng to the first year of thereign of Qing Emperor Qianlong, it mainly describes what Xie Jishi hadseen and heard between the nine years in exile. The Notes of NorthwestRegion is one of the few historical documents about the history andgeography of northwest region,it is one of the important historical materialsfor the study of the historical conditions at that time.The thesis is divided into five chapters, excluding the first chapter of theintroduction and the the fifth chapter of the conclusion, the main contentsis concentrated in the second to the fouth chapters:The second chapter, is about Xie Jishi’s life experiences. My researthmakes the time as the main line, with significant events as the center,combines with Xie Jishi’s MeiZhuang Zazhu, and some other helpfulhistorical records and notes, and then I analyse the Xie Jishi’s personalitycharacteristics and life experiences.The third chapter, is about the versions and the origin of The Notes ofNorthwest Region. After collecting extensively, I find six block-printededition, two lithographic versions, two typographic edition, five manuscripts,and a version with postil and collation. And after I collate the differentversions, as well as study the preface and postscript of each version, finally,I divide them into mint-mark system and transcription system in the form ofa chart.The fourth chapter, is about the historical content research of The Notes ofNorthwes Region. It is divided into three aspects:the investigation about the source of its historical data, the classification about its contents and theanalysis about its style, as well as the ideological research about Xie Jishi.The structure of this thesis is roughly as above, but it is worth noting thatin addition to the above mentioned research, I pay attention to another threequestions:The first one is that I try to revise three doubtful points about TheBiography of Xie Jishi in The Draft History of Qing Dynasty:Firstly, when Xie Jishi arrived at the barracks of Tuoluohai in the fifthyear of the reign of Qing Empeor Yongzheng, who is the General Zhenwu atthat time?(Ba Sai)Secondly, whether the sentence “I never blame a man for his words” isderived from the case about false inscription,or the case about Jiang Pupresenting some bad words about Xie Jishi to the Emperor Qianlong?(in thesixth year of the reign of Qing Emperor Qianlong)Thirdly, whether the case about Xie Jishi was framed in Hunan Provincehappened in the seventh year,or in the eighth year of the reign of QingEmperor Qianlong?(in the seventh year of the reign of Qing EmperorQianlong)Next, I find that there is aother name about Xie Jishi’s book Qie Cang ShiJing,that is Yi Cang Shi Jing,then I analyse and infer that “Qie” was carvedby mistake to “Yi”.In addition, the content about the Ji Sheng Cao Tang version of The Notesof Northwest Region is more than other versions, that are “Mongolia seven”and “Mongolian eight”, the “Mongolian eight” describes that Xie Jishifound the phenomenon “there was no small-pox in Mongolia before, butnow here also has".This discovery has important medical significance, itshows that Xie Jishi had made an important step in the process of findingcowpox vaccine, its importance cannot be ignored.
